Linn 360 Gets Pistonik Drivers: Upgraded Woofers for the Flagship Speaker
Linn has quietly but significantly upgraded its flagship 360 loudspeaker by fitting new Pistonik drive units across the Exakt Integrated and Passive with Active Bass (PWAB) configurations. The update targets the mid-bass and bass drivers specifically, replacing the previous cones with a fresh aluminium-diaphragm design developed in-house.
What Are Pistonik Drivers?
The Pistonik name refers to Linn’s proprietary approach to controlling the magnetic, mechanical, and thermal behaviour of a driver’s motor system. According to the company, the new 6-inch mid-bass and 8-inch bass drivers use aluminium diaphragms — a material chosen for its balance of rigidity and low mass, which reduces colouration and improves transient accuracy.
The suspension has been specifically engineered to handle higher mechanical loads, with extended travel limits retained alongside the structural durability required for a loudspeaker in this price class.
The Engineering Behind the Sound
Linn describes the Pistonik motor assembly as featuring a “dense magnetic structure to reduce magnetic resistance” alongside a triple-layer ventilation system to evacuate heat from the voice coil during sustained high-power operation. Both features target the reduction of non-linear distortion and power compression — two failure modes that become audible at realistic listening levels with demanding programme material.
Exakt Compatibility and Upgradeability
The Pistonik drivers are fully compatible with Linn’s Exakt architecture, which includes a digital crossover with time-delay correction. Driver alignment for the new units is handled entirely in software through the Exakt system, requiring no changes to the physical configuration of the speaker.
Existing Linn 360 owners can have their speakers retrofitted with Pistonik drivers by an authorised Linn dealer, with installation carried out on-site rather than requiring the speakers to be returned to the factory.
Alongside the driver upgrade, Linn has also introduced a walnut veneer finish option for the 360 cabinet, available with either black or silver trim.
