REL Carbon Special Kilowatt Subwoofer: 12” BlackWidow speaker and passive CSP cone

The Carbon Special is a premium compact subwoofer utilizing the technologies and features of the REL Reference range. The sub is based on a third-generation REL BlackWidow 12-inch speaker with a carbon fiber diaphragm. The driver received a wide external suspension, which allowed, in comparison with previous versions, to increase the maximum diffuser displacement by half. The system was supplemented by a passive radiator REL CSP, “looking” at the floor.

All this is controlled by the REL NextGen 5 digital amplifier with a power of 1000 watts. The input signal is processed by REL PerfectFilters, which REL says are designed to create a more airy, transparent soundstage and improve clarity.

The control and switching panel provides four wired options: High Level Neutrik Speakon, Low Level Stereo RCA, LFE RCA, and LFE XLR. The output signal goes through the High Level Neutrik Speakon, LFE RCA or LFE XLR connectors. The REL Carbon Special is wirelessly capable of providing the REL AirShip Zero Compression module.

Several subwoofers are proposed to be placed in the form of a “line array” mounted one on top of the other. It is recommended to use up to two of these stands – up to three subwoofers each. Black REL Carbon Special Edition, finished in 8-layer piano lacquer with stainless steel details, will be available in October. In the UK it will cost £3,300.
