Sonos Roam Portable Speaker: IP67 Water Resistant, 10 Hour Battery and Auto Tone

As planned, Sonos has announced the Sonos Roam portable speaker. During the presentation, all preliminary information was confirmed.

First of all, the Roam is the smallest speaker Sonos has ever built. Its predecessor, the Move, is too heavy for real mobility. According to Sonos, the Roam’s elongated shape, measuring no more than 17cm, was the result of a selection of hundreds of sizes and prototypes.

Roam is a two-way system. The dome tweeter and long-throw oval woofer are housed under a mesh grill with the company’s text logo. According to representatives of Sonos, the speaker has undergone serious durability tests.

The ends of its body are protected with silicone so that the Roam will be able to withstand a fall on hard floors. IP67 protection from dust and water will allow it to dive to a meter depth without fatal consequences and stay there for half an hour. The battery will last for 10 hours of operation.

Roam is positioned as a “Bluetooth Wi-Fi speaker”, but it chooses the connection method on its own. That is, when you turn on the Roam, it immediately searches for a Wi-Fi network and connects to it. Bluetooth is used when Wi-Fi is not working. At the same time, a stereo pair of two Roam can be made only via Wi-Fi.

Roam supports Sonos Trueplay technology, which means it automatically adjusts the sound character based on the acoustic environment. The built-in microphones used for this purpose also work to receive voice commands from Alexa and Google Assistant. In addition, Apple AirPlay 2 functionality has been confirmed for Roam.

In the Sonos ecosystem, the Roam will be able to perform Sound Swap. By holding the play / pause button for 3 seconds, you can force the Roam to stream the music being played to the nearest Sonos speaker. To determine this possibility, the devices exchange an ultrasonic signal – as they assured in Sonos, it is not perceived not only by humans, but also by dogs.

The Sonos Roam can be pre-ordered now for €179 in Europe and will begin shipping on April 20. There are two colors: black and white.
