PS Audio Aspen FR30 Loudspeaker with eight woofers and planar mid

American audio company PS Audio has announced a full-size three-way floor tower called the Aspen FR30. According to PS Audio, these speakers are the culmination of 50 years of technological developments in the company. The requirements for the components of such a speaker turned out to be high, so all the key parts of the Aspen FR30 were also created by PS Audio.

First of all, this concerns drivers. At low frequencies, there are four 8-inch woofers with aluminum cones. This four also drives four 10-inch passive radiators. The speakers are directed towards the listener, and the passive radiators are located in pairs on the sides.

A 10-inch planar driver is responsible for the midrange, under which are two 2.5-inch flat ribbon tweeters with Teonex membranes. At a height of just over a meter and a half, one column weighs more than a centner.

For those of you installing the Aspen FR30, you’ll be glad to know that the tweeter and midrange driver housings are separate and are connected by a slider mechanism.

With a playable range from 28Hz to 20kHz, which is divided by the crossover at 400Hz and 2.5kHz, the Aspen FR30 have impedance of 4ohms. Amplifier power of 100 watts should be enough, but, judging by specification, it is better if it is 600 watts.

The weight of the speaker is not only due to the massive MDF walls. The front panel is made of fiberglass plastic composite. According to PS Audio, in terms of rigidity it is comparable to aluminum, but allows you to create a more complex geometry.

Each speaker stands on a quite elegant thin “leg”. It, in its turn, rests on the quite usual massive base with supports that take the spikes with metal spacers out of the cabinet projection.

Aspen FR30 color options: Pearl White or Sable Black. Both will be available by spring 2022.

Aspen FR30 will cost $28,500 in the U.S.
